Domain registration costs and renewals: what to check before buying

Compare registration and renewal costs, currencies, premium names and registration terms before paying for a domain.

By Astra Devs Cloud · Updated

Quick answer

Compare the total for your selected registration period with the estimated renewal cost, in the same currency. A first-year price alone does not tell you what keeping the domain will cost. Review eligibility and the current quote before paying.

What are you buying?

Registration gives you the right to use a domain for a defined period, subject to its registry and registrar terms. It does not include a website, an email inbox or app hosting. Decide which services you need separately so you can compare the complete cost of launching your project.

Build a comparison you can actually use

Write down the domain, ending, registration period, currency, total due now and estimated renewal amount. Compare equal periods and currencies. A two-year quote should not be compared directly with an advertised one-year price.

For illustration, a hypothetical first year of C$15 followed by two renewals of C$25 totals C$65 over three years. This is arithmetic, not an Astra price or a guaranteed renewal rate. Longer registrations also need a comparison against the quoted total for that term.

  • Check whether the name is ordinary, premium or in early access.
  • Confirm registry eligibility and supported registration periods.
  • Read the renewal estimate and any currency conversion or applicable tax shown.
  • Check which optional services are included and which cost extra.
  • Save the accepted quote and the registration confirmation.

How Astra Devs Cloud handles the quote

Public search checks availability with Namecheap production. Availability can change; searching does not reserve the name. Supported ordinary names can be added to your cart, and signing in lets you request a current quote with the registration period, currency, tax treatment and renewal estimate.

Astra domain quotes expire after five minutes. If you return later, obtain a fresh quote. Premium and early-access names, and names with unsupported registry requirements, cannot use the current checkout. An ending appearing in the search catalogue does not mean every name under it is orderable.

After payment, check registration status

A successful payment and a successful registration are different events. Follow the order in your account until the registrar confirms the domain. If the status reports a failure, use that order's support path rather than placing another order immediately.

Keep the registrant contact information current and review the expiry date and renewal preference. The original quote is useful evidence of what you accepted; it is not a promise that future renewal costs will never change.
